Associate Director/Director, Medicinal Chemistry

Location: San Francisco, California, United States; Workplace: On-site

Salary: $160,000–$240,000 per year, plus eligibility for an annual discretionary bonus and equity incentive plan.

What you will do

• Design small molecules using structure-based drug design, property-based strategies, and computational predictions.
• Lead medicinal chemistry programs from target validation through development candidate selection and provide strategic input across the portfolio.
• Collaborate with biology and cross-functional teams on go/no-go experiments, testing strategies, compound design, and hypothesis evaluation.
• Select compounds for ADMET, PK, and physicochemical property assays to support project decisions.
• Manage external synthetic chemistry teams, evaluate analytical data, troubleshoot syntheses, and improve team efficiency.
• Maintain compound inventories and records, coordinate sample preparation and shipment, and support rigorous analytical and cellular mechanism-of-action studies.

Requirements

• PhD in Chemistry or a related discipline with at least 7 years of industrial medicinal chemistry experience beyond academic training, or a BS with 15+ years of experience.
• Deep experience in medicinal chemistry, structure-based drug design, covalent chemistry, and ADME optimization.
• Demonstrated success leading medicinal chemistry programs and managing external synthesis teams.
• In-depth knowledge of medicinal and synthetic organic chemistry, covalent chemistry, ADMET optimization, and PK/PD relationships.
• Strong ability to solve complex problems involving multiple hypotheses and accelerate decision-making.
