Automation Engineer (Bioengineering)

Location: On-site in the San Francisco Bay Area, United States

Salary: $165,000–$260,000 per year plus equity

What you will do

• Define experimental automation needs and strategies with program leads and project scientists.
• Scope, acquire, build, program, and validate laboratory instrumentation and software.
• Develop and scale high-throughput pipelines for molecular assembly, protein expression, mammalian cell culture, microscopy, and sequencing.
• Own data quality, reliability, and integrity by defining and integrating appropriate QC checkpoints.
• Integrate metadata tracking, computational design, and analysis with data science and machine learning engineers.
• Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, and software engineers to build custom experimental setups and improve research throughput.

Requirements

• Background in engineering, robotics, or a similar field with extensive biology experience, or in biology/bioengineering with extensive automation engineering experience.
• Experience developing high-throughput experimental pipelines involving mammalian cell culture, microscopy, molecular assembly, next-generation sequencing, or protein engineering.
• Experience building custom setups with components that were not available off the shelf.
• Ability to work hands-on with laboratory equipment, code, biological experiments, and data analysis.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills with researchers and engineers.
• High agency, creativity, and a track record of solving complex technical problems.

Nice to have

• Experience in a fast-paced biotech or techbio startup environment.
