Staff Mechanical Automation Engineer (Photonics)

What you will do

• Lead mechanical design and DFM reviews for optical and opto-mechanical assemblies optimized for high-volume, high-yield manufacturing.
• Own worst-case and statistical tolerance analysis for automated assembly, handling, and test processes.
• Perform FEA and thermal modeling to validate structural integrity, vibration response, durability, thermal drift, and heat-related failure modes.
• Design, prototype, qualify, and support automated and semi-automated jigs, fixtures, and mechanical structures from concept through production.
• Drive root-cause investigations and corrective actions for mechanical, fixture-related, yield, and reliability issues.
• Collaborate with Process, Automation, Test, Quality, and Product Engineering teams while mentoring junior and mid-level engineers.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field, with 8+ years of manufacturing or automation engineering experience, or equivalent experience.
• Hands-on DFM experience with optical or opto-mechanical assemblies, including optical alignment tolerancing, coupling loss, and contamination control.
• Experience with tolerance stack-up analysis, including Monte Carlo, RSS, or other statistical methods.
• Practical FEA experience using tools such as ANSYS, Abaqus, or SolidWorks Simulation, plus thermal modeling for assembly and test processes.
• Proficiency with 3D CAD tools such as SolidWorks or Creo and GD&T, with knowledge of SMT, adhesive bonding, press-fit, laser welding, and related manufacturing processes.
• Experience designing fixtures compatible with ICT and functional test requirements, including probe access, test point placement, and alignment.

Nice to have

• Experience in optical transceiver, photonics, or fiber-optic interconnect manufacturing, including OSFP or QSFP form factors.
• Experience with robotics or motion-control integration for automated assembly and test.
• Familiarity with SPC, Design for Six Sigma, GR&R, MSA, and Cpk studies.
• Experience with panelized PCBA processes and panel-level fixture design.
