TL;DR
Structural Analysis Engineer, Metallics (Nuclear Engineering): Designing and analyzing mechanical systems, structures, and components for advanced nuclear reactors with an accent on structural FEA, pressure vessels, piping, reactor internals, and high-temperature materials. Focus on assessing stress, deformation, degradation, lifetime mechanical performance, manufacturability, and nuclear safety requirements.

Location: Gaithersburg, Maryland, United States; 4 days in office. Travel up to 10% as needed. Hours are 8:00am–5:00pm, Monday–Friday.

Salary: $95,000–$120,000 for level II, $115,000–$140,000 for level III, and $140,000–$170,000 for level IV; base salary only.

What you will do

  • Perform structural analysis for reactor systems, pressure vessels, piping, reactor internals, nuclear fuel, graphite, and other high-temperature materials.
  • Use FEA software, hand calculations, and engineering judgment to assess stress, deformation, degradation, and lifetime mechanical performance.
  • Develop mechanical and physical concepts, design bases, technical criteria, and processes for nuclear products and facilities with a focus on nuclear safety.
  • Coordinate requirements, interfaces, design bases, industry codes, and standards with systems engineers, stakeholders, and project leads.
  • Assess manufacturability, assembly, integration, verification, and validation of analytical tools and engineering deliverables.
  • Prepare design documentation, technical reports, calculations, drawings, independent reviews, and acceptance reviews in accordance with quality and configuration-management procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering discipline, such as nuclear, aerospace, or chemical engineering.
  • Experience in structural analysis, including hand calculations and structural FEA software.
  • Level II typically requires 2 years of engineering experience; level III 5 years; level IV 10 years.
  • Relevant FEA and engineering tools may include ANSYS, ABAQUS, NASTRAN, FEMAP, CAESAR, ROHR, LS-DYNA, and PIPESTRESS.
  • Ability to work in the Gaithersburg office 4 days per week and travel up to 10% as needed.
