TL;DR
Rover Navigation/Localization Engineer (Robotics): Designing and validating multi-sensor localization solutions for lunar rovers using IMUs, star trackers, LiDAR, cameras, and motor resolvers with an accent on robust state estimation under real-world operating conditions. Focus on developing GNC simulations, performing Monte Carlo analysis, building automated verification pipelines, and troubleshooting localization during rover operations.

Location: Fully remote, based in Hawthorne, California. Some travel may be required.

Salary: $140,000–$200,000 per year.

What you will do

  • Design, prototype, analyze, tune, verify, and validate navigation and localization algorithms for lunar and extraplanetary rovers.
  • Develop solutions using data from IMUs, motor resolvers, star trackers, cameras, LiDAR, and other sensors.
  • Support GNC simulation, sensor models, analysis tooling, and navigation flight software implementation.
  • Evaluate performance under faulty sensors, invalid data, dropouts, communication latency, and poor lighting conditions.
  • Perform Monte Carlo analysis and establish automated test scenarios, pass/fail criteria, and verification reports.
  • Support field testing, live rover operations, and troubleshooting of localization issues.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field or equivalent education and experience.
  • 5+ years of experience designing, developing, and testing navigation or localization systems for rovers, autonomous vehicles, mobile robots, or GPS-denied platforms.
  • Experience developing state-estimation or localization solutions using multiple sensor inputs.
  • Strong C++ and Python development skills.
  • Experience with odometry, Kalman or particle filters, vehicle kinematics and dynamics, visual odometry, or sensor-fusion tooling.
  • Ability to work remotely from the United States, with some travel required.

Nice to have

  • Experience with extraterrestrial rover navigation, planetary mobility, or autonomous robotic exploration platforms.
  • Experience supporting navigation or localization systems through development, testing, integration, and operations.
  • Experience with GNC sensor error characteristics and real-world operational issues such as packet loss and image degradation.
