TL;DR
Thermal Analysis Engineer (Nuclear): Designing and analyzing mechanical systems, structures, and components for nuclear reactors and facilities with an accent on thermal, hydraulic, structural, and thermodynamic performance. Focus on developing system-level simulations and digital twins, sizing heat-transfer and turbomachinery components, and validating analytical tools for nuclear safety and technical compliance.

Location: Rockville, MD; work site at 9801 Washingtonian Boulevard, Gaithersburg, Maryland; 4 days in office. Working hours are 8:00am–5:00pm, Monday–Friday. Travel is up to 10% as needed.

Salary: Level I $75,000–$100,000; Level II $95,000–$120,000; Level III $115,000–$140,000 per year.

What you will do

  • Develop mechanical and physical concepts for structures, systems, and components used in nuclear products and facilities, with a focus on nuclear safety.
  • Identify and document requirements, interfaces, design bases, criteria, codes, and standards in collaboration with systems engineers and project leads.
  • Plan and perform structural, thermal, hydraulic, thermodynamic, heat and mass balance, and other engineering analyses.
  • Support reactor and plant control philosophy development through plant models, simulations, and digital twins.
  • Size and analyze heat exchangers, pumps, circulators, turbomachinery, and other components.
  • Prepare design documentation, verification and validation plans, technical reports, calculations, drawings, and engineering reviews.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline such as nuclear, aerospace, or chemical engineering.
  • Engineering experience depends on level: Level I typically requires 0 years, Level II 2 years, and Level III 5 years.
  • Proficiency with engineering hand calculations.
  • Experience using 1D flow solvers for heat, energy, and mass balance, such as RELAP, Flownex, NPSS, SINDA/FLUINT, Flomaster, or similar tools.
  • Ability to work in the Maryland office 4 days per week during standard Monday–Friday working hours.
