Senior Staff Software Engineer (Backend): Driving the architecture and long-term technical direction of backend services powering a high-volume pre-book parking and e-commerce platform with an accent on distributed systems, microservices, and global availability. Focus on eliminating systemic engineering bottlenecks, designing event-driven services, building seamless API integrations, and guiding technical strategy across the organization.
Location: Stockport, England, United Kingdom. Hybrid office-first model requiring employees to work onsite 2–3 days per week.

What you will do
- Drive the long-term technical direction, architecture, and strategy of backend services for the AeroParker pre-book parking and e-commerce platform.
- Design and scale highly available, secure distributed systems capable of handling high-volume consumer traffic across global airports.
- Lead initiatives from inception and technical specification through global delivery, resolving technical and organizational challenges.
- Define engineering standards and improve technical quality, development practices, and team performance.
- Moderate critical technical discussions, align priorities with global partners, and build API integrations.
- Mentor senior engineers and support leadership recruiting for senior engineering roles and engineering managers.
Requirements
- BS or MS in Computer Science or equivalent experience, with exceptionally strong computer science fundamentals.
- Typically 6+ years of professional software engineering experience and expert knowledge of Scala, Java, or related backend languages.
- Experience designing, building, and delivering large-scale distributed systems and microservices in high-volume consumer environments.
- Strong experience with event-driven architecture, modern software design patterns, highly available global systems, CI/CD, TDD/BDD, and automated workflows.
- Hands-on experience with MySQL and PostgreSQL, plus strong written and verbal communication skills for explaining architecture and influencing technical strategy.
- Familiarity with TypeScript, React, Snowflake, AWS, Git, GitHub, GitHub Copilot, and Datadog.

- Experience with containers and infrastructure as code.
- Experience with complex third-party API integrations or e-commerce platforms.
- Interest in using emerging AI technologies to improve developer productivity or consumer experiences.
- Experience in innovative, fast-paced, high-growth SaaS environments.
