Senior Process Development Engineer (Backend) (Semiconductor)

Location: United Kingdom - Towcester, Northamptonshire; onsite at the Caswell semiconductor fabrication facility. The normal working pattern is weekdays, with flexibility to work at other times and on shift if required.

What you will do

• Maintain, continuously improve, develop, and qualify semiconductor manufacturing processes for production and new product introduction.
• Develop and optimise dielectric thin-film deposition processes using ALD, PECVD, sputtering, and related technologies.
• Develop and optimise metallization processes using sputtering, ion beam deposition, thermal evaporation, electron-beam evaporation, and electroplating.
• Develop and optimise backend wafer processing, including wafer mounting, thinning, back grinding, CMP, polishing, cleaving, and dicing.
• Analyse process, equipment, product, and manufacturing data using SPC, Six Sigma, and statistical methodologies to improve yield, defects, throughput, cycle time, cost, and reliability.
• Perform equipment qualification and cross-qualification, support fault finding and recovery, prepare technical documentation and training materials, and collaborate with Product Engineering, Equipment Engineering, Manufacturing, and R&D.

Requirements

• HNC/HND, Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree, PhD, or equivalent industrial experience in Semiconductor Technology, Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Knowledge of SPC, DOE, Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, and root cause analysis methodologies.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and attention-to-detail skills.
• Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision, and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams and under pressure.
• Competent PC user, including Microsoft Office and specialist semiconductor manufacturing and data analysis systems.
• Knowledge of manufacturing execution systems (MES).
• Ability to work in a semiconductor cleanroom, perform wet etching processes, and follow site health, safety, and environmental procedures.
• Excellent attendance, timekeeping, punctuality, dependability, professional conduct, and flexibility toward work and customer demand.

Nice to have

• Experience in semiconductor, photonics, compound semiconductor, MEMS, optoelectronics, silicon photonics, or other advanced manufacturing environments.
• Knowledge of photonic integrated circuit manufacture.
• Experience working within a high-technology manufacturing or production environment.
