Backend Engineer (Node.js / PHP)

Location: Hybrid work in Sofia, Bulgaria, combining work from home with regular time in the offices.

What you will do

• Develop and maintain scalable backend services and RESTful APIs using Node.js and PHP/Laravel.
• Own the performance, stability, uptime, and incident resolution of mobile backend services.
• Design integrations with SQL and NoSQL databases, message brokers, third-party services, external APIs, and WebSockets.
• Collaborate with mobile developers, DevOps engineers, product owners, and other stakeholders.
• Improve backend architecture, scalability, security, and performance through technical design and optimization.
• Write clean, reusable, testable code; contribute to unit tests, code reviews, API guidelines, and user documentation.

Requirements

• At least 2 years of professional backend development experience with Node.js/TypeScript or PHP/Laravel.
• Strong experience designing and integrating RESTful APIs and understanding backend architecture, scalability, microservices, and API security.
• Experience with automated testing, including unit, integration, and end-to-end testing.
• Experience with cloud platforms, preferably AWS, and relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL.
• Knowledge of Git-based collaborative workflows, authentication and authorization mechanisms, and OWASP security principles.
• Proficient written and verbal English communication is required.

Nice to have

• Experience with distributed systems, asynchronous processing, queues, Kafka, or RabbitMQ.
• Knowledge of MongoDB or Redis.
• Familiarity with Terraform, CloudFormation, or other infrastructure-as-code tools.
• Experience with monorepo setups or SOAP integrations.
