Senior Software Engineer, Back-end (Boulder Opal)

Location: Los Angeles, United States; hybrid workplace

Salary: $135,000–$210,000 annual base salary, with potential eligibility for discretionary bonuses, equity, and other compensation.

What you will do

• Design, develop, and optimize scalable Python backend applications for quantum technology products.
• Build high-efficiency service-to-service communication using modern protocols.
• Work with researchers to translate research code into production-ready software.
• Partner with product, frontend, and infrastructure teams to deliver integrated features.
• Develop reusable product architectures that support flexibility and scalability across business cases.

Requirements

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience with Python, Rust, C++, or similar technologies.
• Experience collaborating across research and engineering teams on technically challenging problems.
• Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive, ownership-driven approach.
• Experience designing and implementing efficient algorithms, statistical models, or large-scale data pipelines.

Nice to have

• Experience with gRPC, GraphQL, or REST APIs.
• Exposure to AWS, GCP, Azure, infrastructure management, CI/CD, or Kubernetes.
• Familiarity with Django, Flask, FastAPI, observability tools, data orchestration, or data warehousing platforms.
