Laser Laboratory Engineer – Chip Verification (Photonics)

Location: Onsite at the Northamptonshire facility, United Kingdom; the rural site is not served by public transport, so access to personal transport is required.

What you will do

• Perform optical, electrical, and RF characterisation of photonic devices and photonic integrated circuits.
• Test lasers, modulators, detectors, and III-V semiconductor devices using advanced laboratory equipment.
• Set up and improve manual, semi-automated, and automated laboratory test systems.
• Support experimental hardware and software development for device characterisation.
• Collect, analyse, and interpret experimental data, including performance investigations and failure mode analysis.
• Collaborate with Chip Design, Product Engineering, Reliability, Process, and Test Engineering teams and maintain accurate laboratory records.

Requirements

• Degree in Physics, Photonics, Electronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or another relevant STEM discipline.
• Practical laboratory experience from university projects, research, industrial placements, internships, or an early-career engineering or R&D role.
• Ability to conduct experiments, collect and analyse data, and present technical findings.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and experimental organisation skills.
• Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary engineering teams and enthusiasm for learning new technologies.

Nice to have

• Experience with photonic integrated circuits, optoelectronics, semiconductor devices, lasers, or fibre optics.
• Optical or electrical testing and RF measurements.
• Python, MATLAB, or LabVIEW.
• Automated test systems, data acquisition, statistical data analysis, or New Product Introduction.
