TL;DR
Perception Engineer (Robotics) (C++/Python): Designing and implementing perception systems for automated heavy machinery, including real-time sensor processing, object detection, sensor fusion, and operator visualization with an accent on multi-spectral and TOF sensors, images, and point clouds. Focus on integrating and calibrating robotic sensors, training machine learning models, building simulation tools, and testing systems in complex construction environments.
Location: On-site at Robot Ranch in Austin, Texas; relocation to Austin is required if outside commuting distance.

What you will do
- Design and implement perception systems for automated heavy machinery operating in complex, unstructured environments.
- Integrate, calibrate, and test multi-spectral, TOF, camera, and other sensors in prototype and production robotic systems.
- Build real-time pipelines for processing, sharing, and fusing images, point clouds, and other high-bandwidth sensor data.
- Develop object-detection algorithms supporting collision avoidance, motion planning, trajectory planning, and localization.
- Create simulation and visualization tools for robotic software, control algorithms, and operator interfaces.
- Lead interdisciplinary teams, mentor employees, contribute to hiring, and support urgent deployment issues.
Requirements
- B.S. in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field.
- 2+ years of professional or project experience developing robotic software, real-time algorithms, and perception data-processing pipelines.
- Experience owning large-scale deliverables, leading teams, and driving product roadmaps.
- Proficiency in C++ and Python for Linux-based systems and bare-metal microcontrollers.
- Experience training, testing, optimizing, and deploying machine-learning models using existing and custom datasets.
- Willingness to work extended hours or weekends when needed for critical deadlines and urgent deployment triage.
Nice to have
- Experience with safety-critical or real-time systems and embedded robotics, autonomous vehicles, aerospace, automotive, or construction applications.
- Experience implementing robotic or feedback-control algorithms from scratch.
- Experience with object detection using multi-spectral images and point clouds.
- FPGA programming for high-throughput networking, compression, or DSP.
