Senior Flight Software Engineer (Aerospace)

Location: On-site in San Carlos, CA or Seattle, WA, United States

Salary: $200,000–$250,000 annually

Builds spacecraft infrastructure for powering on-orbit compute and transmitting energy and high-bandwidth optical data from Low Earth Orbit.

What you will do

• Own payload flight software architecture, development, testing, and on-orbit operations.
• Develop Rust software for attitude and pointing state machines, command handling, telemetry, and data storage.
• Define coding patterns, conventions, and flight-quality standards for deterministic, fault-tolerant, testable, and safe software.
• Design fault detection, isolation, and recovery behaviors and build simulation and hardware-in-the-loop test infrastructure.
• Collaborate with GNC, avionics, electrical, and systems engineering teams on interfaces and system behavior.
• Support spacecraft integration, environmental testing, launch and early-orbit operations, anomaly investigation, and corrective actions.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience developing flight software or software for high-reliability, safety-critical systems.
• Experience with software flown on orbit or equivalent deployment experience demonstrating flight-quality judgment.
• Strong systems programming skills in Rust, C, or C++, with willingness to work primarily in Rust.
• Experience with real-time, embedded, resource-constrained, and fault-tolerant systems, including state machines and command/telemetry handling.
• Experience integrating and testing software on real hardware, plus technical leadership, architecture ownership, and mentoring experience.
• Must satisfy U.S. ITAR eligibility requirements: U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent residence, protected-individual status, or eligibility to obtain the required authorizations.

Nice to have

• Bachelor's or advanced degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
• Production Rust experience in embedded or systems contexts and prior spacecraft flight software technical leadership.
• Experience with attitude determination and control, pointing systems, FDIR, redundancy management, and autonomous fault response.
• Experience with simulation, software-in-the-loop, hardware-in-the-loop testing, launch, commissioning, anomaly investigation, or radiation-effects considerations.
• Experience in fast-paced, high-ownership startup environments.
