TL;DR
Controls Engineer Contract (Additive Manufacturing) (Industrial Automation): Commissioning, troubleshooting, and integrating control hardware and software for industrial-scale metal additive manufacturing equipment with an accent on motion control, safety systems, industrial networks, and machine data collection. Focus on building reliable production systems, tuning closed-loop controls, and managing equipment upgrades in a hands-on weekend-based role.

Location: Devens, Massachusetts, United States. Weekend-based schedule from Friday through Monday with hands-on commissioning and troubleshooting of production equipment.

Salary: $65–$90 per hour.

What you will do

  • Develop, integrate, test, commission, and support automation and control hardware and software for industrial metal additive manufacturing equipment.
  • Commission and troubleshoot new equipment and integrate it into the production environment.
  • Develop and optimize machine data transfer and collection systems for the additive manufacturing production ecosystem.
  • Contribute to building a highly productive additive manufacturing system.
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to improve system efficiency and reliability.
  • Support continuous process improvement and rollouts of equipment upgrades.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, robotics, or a related field with 7+ years of relevant experience, or a master’s degree with 1+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience designing, developing, commissioning, and troubleshooting hardware and software for industrial control systems and manufacturing equipment.
  • Experience with coordinated motion control, safety systems, HMI, data collection, process monitoring, industrial networks, and communications protocols.
  • Experience with automation platforms such as B&R, Beckhoff, or similar systems.
  • Programming experience in at least three IEC 61131-3 languages, including LD, SFC, FBD, CFC, or ST; ST and SFC are preferred.
  • Experience with version control, sensors and actuators, electrical schematics, control-system sizing, power distribution, and electrical control panels compliant with applicable standards.

Nice to have

  • Experience designing and tuning closed-loop systems for position, pressure, flow, and temperature control.
  • Experience creating software design documentation, root-cause analyses, and engineering change orders.
  • Additive manufacturing or laser welding experience, including Powder Bed Fusion, Directed Energy Deposition, or Direct Metal Laser Sintering.
  • Strong ownership, communication, independent working, practical problem-solving, and willingness to learn.
