TL;DR
Controls Engineer (Additive Manufacturing) (Industrial Controls/3D Printing): Troubleshooting and improving industrial control systems for large-scale metal 3D printers with an accent on motion control, PLC programming, industrial networking, and production uptime. Focus on root cause analysis, resolving downtime in a 24/7 manufacturing environment, and coordinating improvements across mechanical, electrical, software, and operations teams.

Location: Onsite in Devens, Massachusetts, United States. Weekday day shift covering Monday–Wednesday and every other Thursday in a 24/7/365 production operation.

Salary: $84,800–$116,600 annual base salary, plus equity and benefits.

What you will do

  • Provide onsite controls expertise during manufacturing production involving large industrial 3D printers.
  • Monitor system performance and health to identify, assess, and escalate potential production issues.
  • Troubleshoot technical problems and restore production service with minimal disruption.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and support preventive measures for recurring problems.
  • Document downtime, incidents, corrective actions, and engineering changes.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, software, engineering, and operations teams on process improvements.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience designing, developing, commissioning, and troubleshooting hardware and software for industrial control systems.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Robotics Engineering, or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Proficiency with motion control, industrial safety systems, HMIs, process monitoring, and industrial networking.
  • Understanding of industrial fieldbus networks such as Powerlink, TwinCAT, and Ethernet/IP, as well as AC/DC electrical systems, high-voltage drives, motor systems, and industrial sensors.
  • Proficiency in at least three IEC 61131-3 programming languages, preferably Structured Text and Sequential Function Chart.
  • Ability to troubleshoot PLC code, interpret electrical schematics, and work with B&R, Beckhoff, or similar automation platforms.

Nice to have

  • Experience with additive manufacturing technologies such as Powder Bed Fusion, Directed Energy Deposition, or Direct Metal Laser Sintering.
  • Experience with GitHub, industrial sensors and actuators, closed-loop system tuning, and component selection.
  • Strong documentation skills, including root cause analyses, software design specifications, and Engineering Change Orders.
  • Familiarity with Quality Management Systems and commissioning protocols such as FAT, SACT, IQ, and MMP.
