TL;DR
Sr. Staff Software Development Engineer (Aerospace): Defining and implementing software architecture for safety-critical embedded systems supporting an autonomous passenger-carrying eVTOL aircraft and its ground systems with an accent on high-integrity design, scalability, and compliance with DO-178C standards. Focus on decomposing traceable software requirements, leading architectural trade studies, developing C/C++ code for RTOS environments, and integrating aircraft systems with hardware and safety teams.

Location: Hybrid in Mountain View, California, with onsite work at the Mountain View HQ office three days per week and flexibility for the remaining days.

Salary: $205,000–$241,000 per year

What you will do

  • Define, architect, and champion software frameworks for complex safety-critical embedded systems used in an autonomous eVTOL aircraft and ground systems.
  • Lead technical trade studies and technology maturation activities, evaluating design alternatives for performance, safety, cost, and scalability.
  • Ensure compliance with DO-178C, DO-331, and DO-332 throughout planning, requirements, design, coding, and integration.
  • Guide the decomposition of system requirements into traceable, verifiable high- and low-level software requirements or design models.
  • Collaborate with software, systems engineering, hardware engineering, and safety teams on robust C/C++ embedded code for RTOS-based environments.
  • Establish engineering practices, coding standards, tools, architecture principles, and provide technical mentorship to senior and staff engineers.

Requirements

  • BS in Computer Science, Electronics, or Electrical Engineering with at least 15 years of substantial safety-critical software development experience, or 10 years with a Master's or PhD.
  • Experience designing and developing software architecture for high-integrity, safety-critical embedded systems in aerospace, automotive, rail, or defense.
  • Strong practical proficiency in C, C++, Assembly, and embedded software toolchains, with experience using multiple RTOS environments.
  • Knowledge of ARINC 653, Integrated Modular Avionics, avionics communication protocols, bootloaders, interrupt handling, microcontrollers, FPGA, memory management, and peripherals.
  • Strong understanding of software and hardware relationships, design patterns, architectural patterns, software modeling languages, and data-driven trade studies.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Nice to have

  • Experience on multiple aerospace projects governed by DO-178C and its supplements.
  • Experience with model-based software design and development techniques.
