Product Environmental Compliance Engineer (Photonics)

Location: On-site in Ottawa, Canada, or Towcester, Northamptonshire, UK

Salary: CAD 71,450–102,100 per year, with final compensation based on experience, skills, and qualifications.

What you will do

• Review supplier material declarations, technical specifications, and test reports to verify product compliance.
• Analyze Bills of Materials and materials used in electronic products against global environmental regulations.
• Prepare product compliance declarations and Full Material Declarations.
• Respond to customer environmental compliance inquiries and questionnaires.
• Support engineering change processes and monitor regulatory changes to maintain product compliance.
• Collect and analyze conflict minerals data, conduct Life Cycle Assessments, and collaborate with engineering, supply chain, manufacturing, contract manufacturing, and sales teams.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Materials Science, or a related technical discipline.
• Approximately 3–5 years of experience in environmental compliance, product stewardship, or sustainability in a manufacturing or engineering environment.
• Experience reviewing BOMs, material declarations, technical specifications, and supplier documentation.
• Knowledge of product carbon footprints or environmental impact assessments, responsible minerals due diligence, and CMRT and EMRT reporting.
• Knowledge of materials, chemicals, restricted substances, and environmental legislation including EU RoHS, China RoHS, REACH, POPs, and WEEE.
• Excellent written and spoken English communication skills are required.

Nice to have

• Life Cycle Assessment experience and knowledge of ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 methodologies.
• Knowledge of IPC-1752 and environmental compliance data management systems.
• Experience in electronics, semiconductor, photonics, optical communications, or contract manufacturing.
• Experience with Agile or other product lifecycle management systems, data analysis, reporting, or automation tools.
