TL;DR
Senior Embedded Software Engineer (C++) - Hardware Safety (Automotive): Building safety-critical embedded firmware and diagnostic frameworks for automated-driving power, thermal, voltage, and watchdog systems with an accent on ARM Cortex-R5F, FreeRTOS/SafeRTOS, and ISO 26262 ASIL-B/C requirements. Focus on designing safe-state architectures, implementing register-level drivers, integrating hardware diagnostics, and resolving complex multi-core real-time failures.

Location: Pittsburgh, PA; Palo Alto, CA; Detroit, MI; or remote within the United States. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis.

Salary: $160,000–$240,000 USD gross annual base salary in California, plus eligibility for annual bonuses, equity compensation, and benefits.

Company

hirify.global develops automated driving technologies, including Level 3 systems, for Ford vehicles at scale.

What you will do

  • Own the architecture of hardware safety and power-management systems, including safe-state strategies, multi-core power sequencing, thermal throttling, and watchdog orchestration.
  • Implement low-level bare-metal and FreeRTOS firmware drivers for PMICs, voltage supervisors, thermal monitors, and other safety-critical integrated circuits.
  • Develop hardware-software safety diagnostic frameworks using mechanisms such as LBIST, PBIST, ECC, DCC, and ESM.
  • Perform deep-dive code reviews and maintain consistent, testable driver interfaces, error handling, and safety-oriented design patterns.
  • Act as the subject-matter expert for hardware, firmware, and safety interfaces, resolving ambiguity in sequencing, timing, thresholds, and thermal requirements.
  • Mentor engineers on embedded safety patterns, RTOS integration, ISO 26262 traceability, and functional-safety reasoning.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field with 4+ years of relevant experience; alternatively, a master’s degree with 2+ years or a PhD.
  • Deep embedded C/C++ experience, including advanced language features, embedded constraints, memory management, clean abstractions, and interface-based testable code.
  • Expertise in ARM-based SoC architectures, especially Cortex-R5F, including memory-mapped I/O, VIM interrupt controllers, MPU configuration, cache behavior, memory barriers, and register-level debugging.
  • Experience configuring MPUs and hardware-level firewalls, building or refactoring HALs, and diagnosing complex RTOS, shared-memory, peripheral, power, watchdog, and interrupt issues.
  • Strong knowledge of FreeRTOS and/or SafeRTOS, including task lifecycle, synchronization, interrupt handling, timing, preemption, priority inversion, and stack requirements.
  • Experience developing safety-critical IC drivers from datasheets and foundational knowledge of ISO 26262 ASIL-B/C concepts, diagnostic coverage, fault tolerance, safe states, and traceability.

Nice to have

  • Experience with TDA4/J784S4 Jacinto 7 or other TI automotive SoCs, TI PSDK, and Safety Diagnostic Library.
  • Linux-based embedded development with gtests, Python, Bazel, Docker, and embedded CI/CD.
  • Experience with ISO 26262 audits or certification, Jama, FMEA/HARA, safety cases, LBIST, PBIST, ECC, Tracealyzer, logic analyzers, or in-circuit emulators.
  • Automotive or other safety-critical experience in areas such as powertrain, medical devices, industrial control, or aerospace and defense.

Culture & Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and families, plus an HSA with employer match.
  • Employer-matched 401(k) with immediate vesting, life insurance, paid parental and medical leave, unlimited vacation, and 15 paid holidays.
  • Professional development reimbursement, monthly wellness stipend, and employee assistance programs.
  • Adoption and surrogacy support, backup child and elder care, commuter benefits, and pre-tax healthcare and dependent-care accounts.
  • Office meals and refreshments, employee resource groups, team activity funding, and wellness initiatives.
