Principal Engineer Person & Trust Platform (Backend)

Location: Mountain View, California, United States. Full-time, in-office work five days per week.

Salary: $242,693–$307,125 USD annual base salary, excluding bonus, equity, and benefits.

What you will do

• Own data model strategy and long-term architecture across the Person API, Trust Service, and Inspection Catalog.
• Define API contracts, versioning, compatibility, and governance standards for internal and external consumers.
• Set technical direction and establish design standards for identity, evidence, and trust systems.
• Lead modernization and consolidation of legacy identity data into scalable, modular services and contracts.
• Mentor staff and senior engineers and influence technical direction across engineering teams.
• Ensure security, privacy, and compliance for Person, Trust, and Inspection Catalog data.

Requirements

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, including recognized technical authority across a complex, multi-system domain.
• Deep expertise in data modeling and graph data structures, including scalable, performant, and auditable schemas and relationships.
• Experience designing and owning APIs and data contracts for source-of-truth systems.
• Ability to set technical strategy and align engineering teams without direct authority.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.

Nice to have

• Hands-on experience with graph databases and graph-versus-relational modeling tradeoffs for connected identity data.
• Experience modeling inspection evidence and confidence scoring into queryable records.
• Experience with person or entity attribute and relationship systems at scale.
• Knowledge of NIST 800-63 IAL2/AAL2, Verifiable Credentials, Decentralized Identifiers, or OIDC extensions.
• Experience with GCP, AWS, or Azure and regulated environments.
