Staff+ Software Engineer, Safeguards Data (AI)

Location: San Francisco, CA or New York City, NY; hybrid policy requires staff to work from one of the offices at least 25% of the time

Annual salary: $320,000–$485,000 USD

What you will do

• Build and operate the Safeguards data platform, including ingestion and processing pipelines, warehouses, data stores, schemas, and interfaces.
• Operate safety systems reliably while reducing the manual effort required to maintain them.
• Own data governance and integrity, including retention, access controls, privacy-preserving handling, lineage, and correctness guarantees.
• Design portable systems that run across AWS, GCP, Azure, customer-managed environments, and other third-party infrastructure.
• Partner with analysts, investigators, and researchers to build the internal tools supporting their work.

Requirements

• Proficiency in Python and SQL.
• Experience building and operating production data pipelines or data stores.
• Ability to work across ingestion, storage, and data consumption layers.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including explaining technical tradeoffs to non-specialists.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education, training, or professional experience in a relevant field.

Nice to have

• Extensive software engineering experience with data-intensive systems.
• Experience with integrity, spam, fraud, or abuse detection and mitigation.
• Experience building trust and safety detection or intervention mechanisms for AI or machine learning systems.
• Experience with large-scale distributed data infrastructure and multiple cloud providers.
• Experience with data governance in regulated or high-sensitivity domains.
• Experience building custom internal tooling with operational teams.
