TL;DR
Senior Electrical Engineer, FPGA Development (Aerospace): Designing and integrating high-reliability, radiation-tolerant FPGA systems for spacecraft with an accent on HDL development, high-speed interfaces, and FPGA-to-CPU/SoC architectures. Focus on multi-clock-domain systems, Ethernet switching and data paths, verification planning, radiation mitigation, and end-to-end hardware integration through launch.
Location: Onsite in Long Beach, California, United States, with travel to other sites as needed.
Base salary: $150,000–$220,000 per year, plus equity and benefits.
Company
develops autonomous spacecraft, advanced payloads, mission software, and space-based interceptors for space superiority and security.
What you will do
- Lead the architecture and implementation of complex FPGA systems with multiple clock domains, high-speed interfaces, and stringent reliability requirements.
- Own FPGA development from requirements capture and HDL coding through simulation, synthesis, timing closure, integration, production, and launch.
- Design multi-board digital backplanes, payload data buses, Ethernet interfaces, Layer 2 switching, and FPGA-to-CPU/SoC interfaces.
- Define verification and validation plans for digital subsystems and integrate FPGA verification with system-level testing.
- Implement radiation mitigation strategies such as TMR, ECC, and scrubbing for space-grade digital logic.
- Coordinate FPGA development milestones, document designs and test results, collaborate with avionics, embedded software, hardware, and test teams, and mentor engineers.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- 5+ years of professional FPGA design and development experience.
- Deep expertise in VHDL and/or Verilog, FPGA synthesis flows, and simulation and verification tools such as ModelSim or QuestaSim.
- Experience with Microsemi/Microchip, Xilinx/AMD, or Intel/Altera FPGA families and associated toolsets.
- Experience with high-speed Ethernet interfaces, MAC/PHY integration, UDP/TCP offload, Layer 2 switching, PCIe, SPI, I2C, and UART.
- Ability to maintain or obtain TS//SCI clearance and meet U.S. ITAR eligibility requirements, including U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent residence, protected-individual status, or eligibility to obtain required authorizations.
Nice to have
- Spacecraft FPGA development and experience with space-qualified or radiation-hardened devices such as PolarFire, ProASIC3, or SmartFusion2.
- SpaceWire, signal integrity analysis, and high-speed digital design experience.
- C, C++, or Python experience for firmware integration and test scripting.
- Altium Designer or other schematic capture tools.
- Experience in a fast-paced startup or similarly dynamic environment.
Culture & Benefits
- Work on spacecraft, payloads, mission software, and space-based interceptors.
- Health, dental, vision, HRA/HSA options, PTO, and paid holidays.
- 401(k), parental leave, and equity participation.
- Collaborative cross-disciplinary work with opportunities to mentor peers and junior engineers.
