TL;DR
Embedded Systems Engineer (Fusion Energy): Designing and implementing real-time control and protection systems for superconducting coil power supplies and high-voltage heating systems with an accent on ARM microcontrollers, FPGAs, SoCs, DSPs, and power conversion control. Focus on quench detection, fast magnet protection, deterministic feedback regulation, hardware-in-the-loop validation, and integration of mission-critical power subsystems.

Location: Kearny, New Jersey, United States; workplace: On-site

Salary: $110,000–$150,000 per year

Company

hirify.global develops a simplified stellarator architecture using computer-controlled arrays of planar coils to advance commercial fusion energy.

What you will do

  • Design real-time control logic for high-temperature superconducting magnet power supplies and gyrotron high-voltage power supply systems.
  • Develop embedded firmware and control logic for ARM microcontrollers, Xilinx FPGAs and SoCs, and TI DSPs.
  • Implement quench detection, fast protection, interlock logic, current and voltage regulation, and waveform generation.
  • Model and validate power supply control schemes using MATLAB, Simulink, HIL, and SIL configurations.
  • Define and validate I/O, communication links, protection interfaces, control sequencing, and integration with supervisory systems.
  • Support FAT/SAT, commissioning, low- and high-power testing, system documentation, and control validation plans.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Embedded Systems, Power Electronics, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of control and embedded development experience for high-power systems in R&D, industrial, or scientific environments.
  • Hands-on experience with ARM Cortex-M/A microcontrollers, embedded C/C++, bare-metal or RTOS development, FPGA/SoC or DSP control logic, and magnet protection schemes.
  • Experience with PID control, current and voltage regulation, waveform generation, and simulation tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, or PLECS.
  • Familiarity with UART, SPI, CAN, Modbus, OPC UA, EtherCAT, CANopen, or related industrial communication protocols.
  • Ability to work on-site in an industrial facility with high voltage, high current, strong magnets, cryogenics, and other industrial hazards; occasional travel, nights, weekends, or on-call work may be required.

Nice to have

  • Experience with fusion devices, particle accelerators, or large magnet systems.
  • Knowledge of superconducting magnet ramp-up constraints, discharge handling, gyrotron power supplies, or triode control.
  • Experience integrating SCADA, EPICS, or plant-wide supervisory control systems.
  • Familiarity with EMI/EMC mitigation, Verilog/VHDL, NI PXIe, CompactRIO, LabVIEW, or PTP/White Rabbit timing.

Culture & Benefits

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision benefits.
  • Employee equity stock options.
  • 20 days of paid time off.
  • Equal opportunity workplace focused on diverse backgrounds and approaches to solving complex energy problems.
