Counsel, Labor & Employment

Location: Fully onsite at the Long Beach, California office. ITAR eligibility is required: U.S. citizenship, U.S. lawful permanent residence, protected-individual status, or eligibility to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.

Salary: $170,000–$250,000 base salary, plus equity and benefits.

What you will do

• Serve as the primary in-house advisor on hiring, performance management, compensation, leave, accommodations, separations, reductions in force, and other employment matters.
• Partner with the People team on employee relations, policy interpretation, workforce decisions, and strategic workforce programs.
• Handle employee complaints, workplace investigations, agency charges, and employment litigation with outside counsel as needed.
• Draft and maintain employment policies, handbooks, internal guidance, and manager and employee training.
• Advise on wage and hour compliance, employee classification, pay equity, California requirements, and multi-state employment laws.
• Support commercial contract work, corporate transactions, government-contract employment obligations, legal processes, and projects directed by the General Counsel.

Requirements

• J.D. from an accredited law school and active membership in the California State Bar.
• 3–10 years of labor and employment law experience, preferably combining law-firm and in-house work.
• Strong knowledge of federal, California, and multi-state employment laws, including Title VII, ADA, FMLA, FLSA, FEHA, and the California Labor Code.
• Experience with employee relations, workplace investigations, employment litigation or agency proceedings, and employment policies and handbooks.
• Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion and provide practical guidance to HR, managers, and other stakeholders.
• Must meet applicable ITAR eligibility requirements.

Nice to have

• In-house experience at a technology, aerospace, or defense company.
• Experience with OFCCP compliance, affirmative action planning, E-Verify, NLRA compliance, or labor relations.
• Experience drafting, reviewing, and negotiating commercial contracts.
