TL;DR
Control Systems Engineer, Advanced Controls and Integration (Fusion Energy): Designing and integrating control systems for the Integrated Eos Stellarator with an accent on subsystem control definition, dynamic modeling, and advanced control development. Focus on building distributed control logic, tuning classical and modern control algorithms, and integrating PLC, DCS, HMI, and supervisory solutions across power, cryogenic, vacuum, and utility systems.

Location: Kearny, New Jersey, United States; on-site

Salary: $120,000–$160,000 per year

Company

Develops stellarator-based fusion energy systems using computer-controlled arrays of planar coils to create a scalable zero-emission energy source.

What you will do

  • Develop control strategies, operating modes, narratives, and sequence logic for Eos subsystems.
  • Design distributed control architectures, I/O structures, subsystem interfaces, and control logic diagrams.
  • Build dynamic plant and subsystem models with MATLAB, Simulink, Python, or similar tools.
  • Design and tune classical and advanced control algorithms for thermal, fluid, electrical, and process systems.
  • Coordinate with engineering teams, vendors, and collaborators to implement PLC, DCS, HMI, and supervisory control solutions.
  • Prepare technical documentation, validation plans, test packages, commissioning support, and design reviews.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. in electrical, mechanical, control systems, nuclear engineering, physics, or a related field.
  • At least two years of control-system development experience in complex industrial, energy, process, nuclear, aerospace, or scientific systems.
  • Strong knowledge of dynamic system modeling, classical and modern control methods, and proficiency with MATLAB and Simulink.
  • Experience with Python or another technical programming environment and familiarity with PLCs, DCSs, HMIs, SCADA, or similar industrial control systems.
  • Ability to communicate technical documentation effectively across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Must be able to work on-site in Kearny, New Jersey, occasionally travel or work nights, weekends, or on-call, and operate in an industrial facility with hazards including high voltage, strong magnets, pressure systems, and cryogenics.

Nice to have

  • Experience with first-of-a-kind energy systems, advanced reactors, fusion systems, or other high-reliability engineered systems.
  • Experience with vendor coordination, MIMO control, optimization-based control, robust control, estimation, or data-driven control.
  • Familiarity with Linux, Git, configuration-managed workflows, and thermal-hydraulic, power-system, or process-system modeling.
  • Exposure to safety-related control functions, interlocks, or regulated plant environments.

Culture & Benefits

  • Full-time employment with comprehensive medical, dental, and vision benefits.
  • Employee equity stock options.
  • 20 days of paid time off.
  • Equal opportunity workplace focused on diverse perspectives and collaborative engineering.
