TL;DR
Senior Mechanical Systems Engineer (Space Systems): Developing end-to-end lunar mission concepts, spacecraft configurations, structures, mechanisms, and subsystem accommodations for lunar landers, rovers, surface systems, and spacecraft with an accent on system-level analysis, preliminary structural sizing, and mission architecture. Focus on translating customer requirements into feasible architectures, performing trade studies, resolving cross-disciplinary technical risks, and shaping early-stage NASA, government, and commercial space programs.

Location: Pittsburgh, PA; onsite or remote within the United States

Salary: $175,000–$200,000 annual base salary, excluding benefits and bonus/incentive.

What you will do

  • Develop and review concepts and designs for lunar landers, rovers, surface power systems, and spacecraft.
  • Define end-to-end mission concepts, system architectures, vehicle configurations, and technical roadmaps for NASA, government, and commercial customers.
  • Perform system-level analysis, first-order sizing, preliminary structural analysis, packaging, stability assessments, and terramechanics evaluations.
  • Design spacecraft structures, mechanisms, payload accommodations, and subsystem integrations across launch and surface operations.
  • Prepare technical content for proposals and customer presentations, translating requirements into actionable product goals.
  • Lead trade studies and cross-functional coordination with engineering disciplines, partners, customers, and vendors to resolve technical risks.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline, plus 5–10 years of relevant engineering experience; an advanced degree may substitute for equivalent experience.
  • Experience developing complex mechanical systems at scale and conducting preliminary structural analysis of space systems.
  • Background in space system development, systems engineering, structure and thermal design, mechanical and fluid systems, and/or manufacturing.
  • Experience authoring and decomposing mission- and system-level requirements.
  • Strong understanding of launch, space, and lunar environments.
  • Must be a U.S. Person under ITAR/EAR requirements and eligible to obtain required export authorizations.

Nice to have

  • Experience with end-to-end mission solutions and mission architecture development.
  • Experience writing and reviewing software scripts for automation and analysis.
  • Knowledge of NASA and industry engineering standards.
  • Experience working in an agile environment with Confluence and Jira.
  • Eligibility to obtain and hold a U.S. security clearance.
