Principal Software Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid in San Francisco, California, with two days per week in the San Francisco office; meaningful office presence is also maintained in New York.

What you will do

• Define and evolve core data models for workflows, system state, actions, and outcomes.
• Design scalable platform abstractions and clear boundaries between services.
• Architect systems for workflow state and historical data across distributed infrastructure.
• Build traceability, observability, auditing, versioning, consistency, and data integrity mechanisms.
• Establish engineering standards for schema management, testing, data quality, and reliability.
• Collaborate with engineering teams to maintain a consistent shared platform and reduce operational overhead.

Requirements

• 12+ years of experience owning data architecture in large-scale production systems.
• Deep expertise in relational databases and distributed systems, including data modeling, indexing, normalization, denormalization, and access-pattern tradeoffs.
• Experience evolving schemas in complex or regulated domains and handling mission-critical production incidents.
• Hands-on Python development experience in backend environments.
• Strong reliability practices involving observability, testing, and QA rigor.
• Ability to work in the San Francisco hybrid model with two office days per week.
