Data Scientist (Energy)

Location: San Francisco, US; hybrid in San Francisco highly preferred

Base pay: $120,000–$155,000 per year, excluding benefits and potential equity.

What you will do

• Build and improve models for renewable generation, storage dispatch, and energy price prediction.
• Use machine learning, statistical methods, and optimization techniques to analyze energy assets and markets.
• Own research projects from problem formulation and solution design through validation and production integration.
• Collaborate with product, engineering, and customer teams, and communicate findings to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Write clean, documented Python code and integrate research outputs into the cloud-based production environment.
• Develop expertise in electricity markets, renewable energy trends, and power purchase agreement modeling.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in a quantitative field such as engineering, computer science, economics, mathematics, operations research, or physics, or a bachelor’s degree with 2+ years of energy sector experience.
• Strong foundations in machine learning and statistical modeling.
• Proficiency in Python, including NumPy, pandas, and scikit-learn.
• Familiarity with wholesale electricity markets and renewable energy technologies.
• Ability to communicate technical findings clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Applicants must be based in the US; hybrid work in San Francisco is highly preferred.

Nice to have

• Experience with US or European wholesale electricity markets or utility tariff structures.
• Experience with energy procurement, power purchase agreements, or risk management.
• Experience modeling solar, wind, or energy storage operations and economics.
• Knowledge of mathematical optimization and probabilistic forecasting.
• Experience shipping models to production or a PhD in a relevant quantitative field.
