TL;DR
Senior Data Scientist (Energy Utilities) (Machine Learning/Power Systems): Developing machine-learning classifiers, regression and rules-based models, and web applications for utility asset, grid, outage, and storm-restoration analytics with an accent on electric power systems, SCADA data, and operational decision support. Focus on architecting production solutions, defining model evaluation criteria, integrating cloud and CI/CD tooling, and addressing complex failure, performance, and emergency-restoration challenges.

Location: Berlin, CT, United States; hybrid schedule with at least three office days per week, including Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Must be able to work up to five days in the office when required and travel between Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire.

Salary: $124,070–$137,860 annually, plus potential incentive.

What you will do

  • Lead data science solution brainstorming and develop problem-solving strategies for utility challenges.
  • Design production strategies with IT and engineering teams and translate business needs into deployable solutions.
  • Develop classifiers, regression models, rules-based models, and machine-learning tools for asset and grid analytics.
  • Define robust model evaluation and success criteria while providing technical direction to data engineers and junior data scientists.
  • Build web applications that use machine-learning models to support business decisions and operational workflows.
  • Apply analytics to storm restoration, damage assessment, outage management, substation digitalization, dynamic ratings, failure prediction, performance monitoring, and cyber and physical security.

Requirements

  • 5–8 years of related experience in data science, machine learning, recommendation systems, pattern recognition, data mining, or artificial intelligence.
  • BS degree in engineering, data science, or a related quantitative field; an advanced degree is preferred.
  • Experience with Python, R, or shell scripting, as well as cloud architecture and CI/CD tools.
  • Knowledge of electric power systems and data science applications in the energy-utility sector.
  • Ability to translate analytical insights into business recommendations and develop modern web applications.

Nice to have

  • Advanced degree in a quantitative or engineering discipline.
  • Experience with IED and SCADA data, digital substations, asset performance, or grid engineering.
