Senior Backend Developer, Behavioural Team (Kafka)

Location: Remote from Canada; Toronto-based role

Salary: CAD 140,000–180,000 per year, plus potential bonus and benefits

What you will do

• Design and implement services that detect behavioural patterns, correlate customer signals across time windows, and determine trigger eligibility.
• Build stateful systems for evaluating multi-event intent signals, incomplete actions, and state-change-driven triggers.
• Deliver complex backend features from technical design through implementation, testing, deployment, and production support.
• Develop reusable declarative or rule-based capabilities for defining and extending behavioural triggers.
• Integrate behavioural signals with campaign orchestration and message delivery systems in collaboration with Product and Engineering.
• Maintain operational excellence through observability, metrics, traces, logs, alerts, and shared on-call support.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating backend or platform systems in production.
• Experience designing distributed, event-driven, or high-scale backend systems and stateful services.
• Hands-on experience with real-time decisioning, asynchronous processing, reliability engineering, and production operations.
• Proficiency with Kafka and gRPC, plus experience with ClickHouse or similar high-performance analytics databases.
• Understanding of partitioning, retries, duplicate events, ordering, idempotency, backfills, and data consistency trade-offs.
• Experience building scalable backend services in GCP or AWS and maintaining monitoring, alerting, logging, and incident response practices.

Nice to have

• Experience with Rust or Elixir.
• Experience with a Customer Behavioural Tracking SDK.
