Principal AI Applied Engineer (AI)

Location: New York, NY; hybrid schedule with three days per week in the office and remaining days remote. Candidates must reside within, or be willing to relocate to, a commutable distance from one of the talent markets.

Salary: $206,600–$284,300 per year, plus eligibility for a bonus incentive plan.

What you will do

• Define the long-term technical strategy, reference architecture, and roadmap for AI-enabled products and platforms.
• Design scalable systems using retrieval, LLM orchestration, agentic workflows, human-in-the-loop processes, and evaluation frameworks.
• Lead enterprise-wide decisions on models, vendors, platforms, infrastructure, and build-versus-buy strategies.
• Build prototypes, proofs of concept, and reference implementations for emerging AI technologies.
• Establish standards for evaluation, observability, model lifecycle management, governance, and operational excellence.
• Guide architecture reviews, mentor technical leaders, and align engineering, product, clinical, compliance, business, and executive stakeholders.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 12+ years of software engineering experience, including large-scale distributed systems.
• Experience designing, delivering, and operating production AI platforms or products at enterprise scale.
• Deep expertise in LLMs, RAG, agentic systems, orchestration, evaluation, AI operations, cloud-native architecture, and resilient systems.
• Expert-level proficiency in Python and/or TypeScript/JavaScript, with the ability to prototype, debug, review, and contribute code across the stack.
• Experience influencing organizations, establishing standards across teams, and advising executive stakeholders.

Nice to have

• Experience with MCP, workflow orchestration, autonomous systems, and emerging AI frameworks.
• Experience building shared AI infrastructure and managing multi-provider vendor ecosystems.
• Experience in regulated industries such as healthcare, financial services, life sciences, or government.
• Expertise in privacy, security, compliance, governance, risk management, and responsible AI.
