TL;DR
Mechanical Engineer II, Spacecraft Structures & Missions (Spacecraft) (spacecraft structures and mechanical design): Owning end-to-end mechanical execution of spacecraft missions, from platform-based payload accommodations and mission-specific components through integration, environmental testing, and launch-vehicle delivery with an accent on spacecraft assemblies, structural sizing, and engineering documentation. Focus on designing configurable spacecraft hardware, coordinating detailed structural and thermal analysis, and solving integration and test challenges across systems, avionics, thermal, and payload teams.

Location: Hybrid in San Jose, California, with on-site work required three days per week.

Salary: $144,000–$177,000 per year, plus equity and benefits.

Company

hirify.global designs, builds, and operates LEO satellite constellations and integrates spacecraft payloads for applications including climate monitoring and national security.

What you will do

  • Own mechanical execution of assigned spacecraft missions from requirements through design, build, integration, environmental testing, and launch-vehicle delivery.
  • Adapt spacecraft platform components to mission needs and design mission-specific components and payload accommodations.
  • Create and manage spacecraft-level mechanical assemblies in SolidWorks, including envelopes, interfaces, and configuration control.
  • Perform first-order structural and thermal sizing and coordinate detailed analysis with structural and thermal engineering groups.
  • Release drawings, GD&T, BOMs, tolerance and mass budgets, and other engineering documentation through ECO/DCO processes.
  • Support vibration and TVAC campaigns, hardware assembly, integration, build procedures, and design reviews with cross-functional teams.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience designing, building, and testing mechanical hardware for complex systems.
  • Experience taking hardware from concept through build and test.
  • Knowledge of structural analysis fundamentals, hand calculations, margin assessment, and FEA.
  • Proficiency with CAD for medium-to-large assembly design and management; SolidWorks is preferred.
  • Strong command of drawings, GD&T, BOMs, and tolerance and mass budgets.
  • B.S. or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, plus strong communication and cross-functional coordination skills.

Nice to have

  • Experience with spacecraft, launch vehicles, or other flight hardware.
  • Experience supporting vibration or TVAC environmental test campaigns.
  • Hands-on FEA experience with FEMAP/NASTRAN, ANSYS, or similar tools.
  • Experience with PLM systems, formal change control, deployable hardware, or precision mechanisms.
  • Programming experience with Python, MATLAB, or similar tools.

Culture & Benefits

  • Full-time employment with equity compensation.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement plan, disability coverage, and life insurance.
