Senior Politics, Policy, and Ideas Editor (Politics)

Location: New York City or Washington, D.C.

Salary: $120,000–$150,000 USD per year

What you will do

• Manage and lead a team of 3–4 reporters, overseeing story conception, assignment, reporting, research, and editing.
• Guide daily political coverage and identify distinctive angles for analytical, contextual, and deeply reported journalism.
• Edit fast news analysis as well as longer-term features focused on politics, policy, ideas, solutions, and public impact.
• Shape coverage plans, strengthen arguments and evidence, and maintain rigor, clarity, nuance, and alignment with editorial strategy.
• Collaborate with politics, policy, executive, audience, and membership editors to develop a cohesive political report.
• Expand the team’s work across audio, video, social video, and newsletters.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of editing experience.
• Strong leadership, people management, communication, and editing skills.
• Excellent news judgment and a demonstrated ability to develop sharp analytical angles.
• Ability to pressure-test arguments, engage seriously with opposing views, and edit nuanced explanatory and analytical work.
• Ability to guide journalists in producing original pieces on tight deadlines and ambitious long-form journalism.
• Passion for explanatory journalism and making complex concepts accessible.
