Staff Data Engineer (Python/SQL)

Location: Barcelona, Spain; hybrid working with the ability to commute to the Barcelona office a couple of times a week if needed. Up to three months per year may be worked from anywhere.

Salary: €75,000–€85,000 annually

What you will do

• Define the technical vision and architecture for the data platform.
• Design scalable, reliable, and maintainable data solutions supporting operational and analytical systems.
• Establish best practices for data architecture, modeling, quality, and engineering standards.
• Lead complex technical initiatives and make architectural decisions across multiple teams.
• Partner with Product, Engineering, and business stakeholders to translate needs into data solutions.
• Mentor Data Engineers and drive improvements in platform scalability, reliability, and efficiency.

Requirements

• Strong Python experience building tested and observable ETL/ELT pipelines, modular libraries, and tooling.
• Advanced SQL and PostgreSQL skills, including complex queries, performance tuning, indexing, and execution plans for OLTP and OLAP workloads.
• Strong experience with dbt for analytical data modeling, testing, documentation, and scalable project structures.
• Hands-on experience with Dagster or similar orchestration tools, including assets or jobs, dependency graphs, scheduling, monitoring, and incident handling.
• Knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes for deploying data services, batch jobs, and microservices in production.
• Strong understanding of dimensional modeling and the trade-offs between operational and analytical schemas. EU citizenship or an EU work permit is required.
