Staff Data Engineer (BigQuery/dbt)

Location: Full remote or hybrid in Milan; candidates must be based in hirify.global's legal entities in Italy, Spain, Germany, France or the UK.

Salary: €60,000–€75,000 per year.

What you will do

• Lead a small Data Engineering team of 1–2 engineers, owning delivery, quality, mentoring, and career development.
• Evolve the layered BigQuery warehouse, dbt transformation layer, and semantic layer defining company metrics.
• Own ingestion and orchestration with Airflow and dlt, including the move to serverless CDC and improving pipeline reliability, quality, and observability.
• Develop self-service BI and reporting with Tableau, Metabase, Lightdash, and dashboards-as-code.
• Establish data governance covering quality, lineage, documentation, PII, access controls, and self-service standards.
• Partner with Data & BI, Product, and business stakeholders to define the data roadmap and drive AI-assisted engineering and production AI data pipelines.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in data engineering or analytics engineering at fast-growing product companies.
• Experience designing and evolving cloud data warehouses and pipelines; BigQuery and GCP experience is strongly preferred.
• Strong SQL and hands-on expertise with dbt, modern ELT or ingestion tools, and Airflow.
• Experience leading and mentoring engineers while remaining hands-on in a small, senior team.
• Experience with BI and dashboarding tools and with building semantic or metrics layers.
• Fluent English and the ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-market, remote-first environment.

Nice to have

• Hands-on experience with dlt or similar ingestion tools.
• Experience with Lightdash and dashboards-as-code.
• Demonstrable use of AI-assisted engineering and AI in data pipelines.
