Staff Data Engineer (AI)

Location: Full remote or hybrid in Milan; candidates must be based in Italy, Spain, Germany, France or the UK, within hirify.global's legal entities. Flexible work from a destination of choice is supported for up to one month per year.

Salary: €60,000–€75,000 per year.

What you will do

• Lead a small Data Engineering team of 1–2 engineers, owning delivery, quality and career development.
• Evolve the layered BigQuery warehouse, dbt transformation layer and semantic metrics layer.
• Own ingestion and orchestration with Airflow, dlt and the transition to serverless CDC.
• Improve pipeline reliability, data quality, observability and governance, including lineage, documentation, PII and access controls.
• Develop self-service BI and reporting with Tableau, Metabase, Lightdash and dashboards-as-code.
• Drive AI-assisted engineering and production AI data pipelines while translating business priorities into a data roadmap.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in data engineering or analytics engineering in fast-growing product companies.
• Experience designing and evolving cloud data warehouses and pipelines; BigQuery and GCP experience is strongly preferred.
• Strong SQL and hands-on experience with dbt, modern ELT or ingestion, and Airflow.
• Experience leading and mentoring engineers in a small, senior team.
• Experience with BI tools, semantic or metrics layers, data governance and access management.
• Fluent English and eligibility to be based in Italy, Spain, Germany, France or the UK.

Nice to have

• Experience with dlt, Tableau, Metabase, Lightdash or similar tools.
• Experience with BigQuery and GCP.
