Senior Language Engineer (AI)

Location: United States, Washington, Redmond. Employees living within a 50-mile commute of a designated U.S. Microsoft office are expected to work from the office at least four days per week starting January 26, 2026.

Salary: USD $119,800–$234,700 gross annual base pay across the U.S.; USD $160,200–$261,000 in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City metropolitan area.

What you will do

• Craft and refine contexts and prompts for steering, training, and evaluating Copilot language models.
• Build evaluation frameworks measuring technical, practical, and non-deterministic qualities such as emotional intelligence.
• Research and implement novel prompting techniques.
• Analyze extensive language datasets to identify response-quality issues and improvement opportunities.
• Own key project status, identify risks, and propose solutions to support timely delivery.
• Collaborate with data scientists, AI researchers, engineers, designers, and product managers.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Philosophy, Linguistics, Psychology, Literature, or a related discipline, plus at least 1 year of experience in context engineering.
• Foundational software engineering knowledge.
• At least 3 years of experience working in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple priorities and changing deadlines.
• Hands-on experience with prompt design, context-window management, and model evaluation.
• Ability to work from the Redmond, Washington area under the stated office-attendance expectations.

Nice to have

• At least 2 years of experience shipping consumer-facing products and improving them using user feedback and success metrics.
• At least 1 year of experience building LLM applications, including agent and orchestration frameworks, tool use, and LLM evaluations.
• Technical depth in software development, data science, and machine learning, including writing LLM scorers and classifiers.
