Computational Social Scientist (AI)

Location: Remote-based in the United States

Annual salary: $120,000–$140,000, commensurate with experience

What you will do

• Identify novel public and proprietary datasets, data-linkage opportunities, and computational methods for measuring behavior and program impact.
• Develop and lead independent research on decarbonization, public opinion, civic participation, and behavior change.
• Acquire, integrate, and analyze behavioral, administrative, geospatial, survey, political, digital, and other social datasets.
• Build reproducible computational research workflows using large language models, supervised classification, clustering, topic modeling, embeddings, and dictionary-based analysis.
• Evaluate models and methods through human validation, error analysis, reliability and bias assessment, and benchmarking.
• Collaborate across research and program teams and communicate findings through visualizations, recommendations, and presentations.

Requirements

• Graduate degree in computational social science, computer science, political science, sociology, psychology, economics, statistics, data science, communication, or a related quantitative or computational field.
• Independent research experience, including developing research questions, selecting study designs, evaluating evidence, and drawing supported conclusions.
• Strong programming skills, particularly in Python, and experience developing reproducible analytical workflows.
• Hands-on experience using large language models programmatically through APIs or comparable workflows.
• Experience with computational text analysis, strong statistical reasoning, and understanding of observational, predictive, and causal analyses.
• Ability to translate substantive research questions into computational approaches and communicate findings to technical and nontechnical audiences.

Nice to have

• Experience with large, complex real-world datasets, including administrative, geospatial, voter, consumer, mobility, social media, or news data.
• Experience with geospatial or remote sensing data, including satellite imagery.
• Experience in renewable energy, public opinion, political behavior, electoral change, electric vehicles, rural or agricultural communities, misinformation, persuasion, or information ecosystems.
