Staff Embedded Software Engineer (Embedded Systems)

Location: Durban, South Africa. Applicants must be legally authorized to reside and work in South Africa; international relocation and remote work outside South Africa are not considered.

What you will do

• Develop and enhance features for real-time embedded systems.
• Develop communications protocol drivers for embedded systems and third-party products.
• Build and improve network communication mechanisms.
• Port software to new embedded hardware and software platforms.
• Design and implement software development and testing tools.
• Lead technical reviews, guide architectural decisions, mentor junior and mid-level engineers, and maintain cryptographic and secure firmware update functionality.

Requirements

• 5–15 years of professional experience in C or C++ programming.
• Experience with distributed systems and network-based communication protocols.
• Experience or familiarity with embedded Linux, microcontroller RTOS development, Microsoft Visual Studio, and Eclipse.
• Strong problem-solving, software design, development, debugging, and communication skills.
• Ability to handle complex tasks with minimal technical guidance.
• Current legal authorization to reside and work in South Africa is required; immigration sponsorship is not available.

Nice to have

• Embedded Linux development, GNU toolset, RTOS, and high-reliability platform experience.
• Knowledge of TCP/IP, UDP, RS232, RS-485, SSL, TLS, XML, HTML, JSON, REST, containerization, and virtual machines.
