Senior Staff GIS Engineer (AI/ML)

Location: Remote; position location listed as New York, New York

Salary: $175,000–$210,000 yearly, bonus eligible

What you will do

• Set the technical strategy and architecture for sourcing, preparing, validating, cataloging, and distributing geospatial datasets.
• Design scalable automated workflows for raster, vector, point-cloud, terrain, and land-cover data using open-source and internal tools.
• Define measurable standards for data coverage, freshness, quality, provenance, licensing, reliability, and cost.
• Partner with AI/ML, Pipeline, Product, and leadership teams to define data requirements, interfaces, quality thresholds, and launch criteria.
• Make hands-on contributions to Python-based geospatial software and lead design reviews across teams.
• Mentor engineers and establish practices that improve the quality and velocity of the GIS function.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in GIS, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8+ years of relevant industry experience designing and delivering production geospatial data systems.
• Deep knowledge of geospatial modalities, formats, coordinate systems, and processing techniques, including raster, vector, point-cloud, and terrain data.
• Strong software engineering and system design experience for scalable, maintainable, automated data-processing systems.
• Advanced Python experience in production automation, data processing, tooling, testing, and integrations.
• Experience evaluating geospatial data quality, coverage, provenance, licensing constraints, and downstream fitness.

Nice to have

• Experience with GDAL, PROJ, Linux, Bash, cloud-based or distributed processing, data catalogs, lineage, metadata, validation frameworks, and monitoring.
• Experience with geospatial data for machine learning, computer vision, simulation, digital twins, or large-scale interactive applications.
• Experience integrating LLM-assisted development tools into geospatial engineering workflows.
• Collaborative, low-ego technical leadership and mentoring experience.
