Controls Automation Technician (Industrial Automation)

Location: Richmond Manufacturing, Virginia, United States. Onsite manufacturing facility with 12-hour shifts on a 2-2-3 rotation: 7:00 AM–7:00 PM or 7:00 PM–7:00 AM.

Salary: $40.25 per hour; night shift premium of 10% brings the rate to $44.27 per hour.

What you will do

• Troubleshoot and validate automated manufacturing systems, machine sequences, production faults, nuisance stops, and abnormal equipment behavior.
• Diagnose PLCs, HMIs, robots, vision systems, sensors, and industrial communication networks.
• Support equipment startup, recovery, operational validation, commissioning, testing, and system upgrades.
• Partner with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and OT teams to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
• Validate approved controls and automation improvements and verify interactions between machines, operators, and automation systems.
• Document troubleshooting activities, system changes, corrective actions, safety audits, risk assessments, and automation investigations.

Requirements

• At least 3 years of experience supporting industrial automation or control systems in a manufacturing environment.
• Experience troubleshooting PLC, HMI, robotic, and industrial automation systems.
• Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and control drawings.
• Understanding of industrial communication networks, automation devices, manufacturing processes, and machine sequences.
• Strong troubleshooting, analytical, problem-solving, communication, attention-to-detail, and documentation skills.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and work safely in a manufacturing environment, including Lockout/Tagout, arc-flash, and electrical safety procedures.

Nice to have

• Associate degree in Mechatronics, Automation Technology, Engineering Technology, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
• Experience with Rockwell Automation platforms and highly automated manufacturing operations.
• Experience with system commissioning, controls validation, continuous improvement, robotics, vision systems, and advanced industrial automation technologies.
