Staff AI Scientist (LLM)

Location: Remote - United States. Candidates residing in Alaska, Delaware, Iowa, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota, West Virginia, or Wisconsin are not being considered.

Salary: $199,000–$228,850 for Region 3, $212,000–$243,800 for Region 2, or $233,000–$267,950 for Region 1, depending on U.S. location and qualifications.

What you will do

• Own the research, development, evaluation, deployment, and iteration of reusable Health Intelligence systems from scientific signals through product integration.
• Define personalization strategy for representing users and delivering relevant content across product surfaces.
• Build lightweight offline evaluation, shadow-mode testing, rubrics, and reusable tooling for rapid iteration.
• Design and analyze causal, counterfactual, and behavioral experiments that measure genuine health and outcome impact.
• Integrate retrieval, ranking, recommendation signals, backend APIs, and LLM-powered generation into production systems.
• Mentor scientists and engineers while communicating technical trade-offs, uncertainty, and modeling assumptions across functions.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in applied AI, AI research, and backend engineering; an MS or PhD in computer science, statistics, or a related quantitative field is strongly preferred.
• Deep experience shipping AI- and LLM-backed products, including LLM-as-judge, rubric-based evaluation, safety testing, red-teaming, and offline versus online assessment.
• Strong backend engineering experience building systems that serve millions of users, with hands-on experience in model serving, pipeline architecture, and deployment infrastructure.
• Experience designing retrieval, ranking, recommendation, personalization, and sequential or stateful user-trajectory systems for production.
• Experience integrating recommendation or retrieval signals with LLM generation, including grounding, constrained decoding, prompt design, or generation evaluation.
• Strong Python proficiency, causal methods and experiment design experience, technical leadership or mentoring experience, and the ability to explain complex systems and uncertainty clearly.

Nice to have

• Personalization experience focused on consumer behavior change or health outcomes.
• Familiarity with health, wearables, or digital therapeutics.
• Comfort working outside core hours with distributed teams across time zones.
