Software Developer (Backend)

Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Salary: CAD 72,000–105,600 per year base salary; offers may exceed this range depending on experience and geographic location.

What you will do

• Implement features and fixes in backend services, including secure, reliable, maintainable code, unit tests, and documentation.
• Build and optimize microservices and event-driven components for the Consumption platform.
• Participate in code reviews and follow Agile practices, including estimation, stand-ups, sprint planning, and retrospectives.
• Troubleshoot routine issues, assist with production deployments, and perform basic monitoring and operational tasks under guidance.
• Use Agentic AI-assisted programming tools responsibly according to team standards.
• Improve team knowledge and developer experience through documentation, testing, and incremental improvements.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent training and experience.
• Strong foundation in data structures, algorithms, networking, and basic distributed systems concepts.
• Proficiency in at least one of Java, Python, or Go.
• Familiarity with Git, testing basics, and RESTful or event-driven service patterns.
• Clear communication, collaboration, and willingness to seek guidance and learn quickly.

Nice to have

• Internship, research, or significant project experience in backend development or cloud services.
• Exposure to AWS or similar cloud platforms, including Lambda, Fargate, SQS, DynamoDB, or Aurora.
• Experience with microservices, streaming or real-time processing, containerization, Docker, CI/CD, observability, or service security.
• Interest in cost-aware design, performance, and reliability engineering.
