Software Engineer, Infrastructure, Interpretability (AI)

Location: Based in the San Francisco office; remote work may be considered case by case. Staff are expected to work from an office at least 25% of the time.

Annual salary: $320,000–$485,000 USD

What you will do

• Design, build, and own shared infrastructure for interpretability research environments, data systems, and compute tooling.
• Build secure-by-default access patterns for researchers working with frontier model weights.
• Manage research data at petabyte scale, including storage lifecycle, capacity planning, and cost efficiency.
• Develop self-service compute scheduling, accelerator fleet tooling, observability, and developer productivity systems.
• Lead cross-functional work with agentic engineering, security, compute, storage, platform, and research teams.
• Help turn interpretability methods into dependable audit pipelines.

Requirements

• High proficiency in at least one programming language such as Python, Rust, Go, or Java, with productivity in Python.
• Significant experience building and operating secure, scalable software infrastructure, cloud systems, distributed systems, or developer tooling.
• Strong communication skills across research, platform, and security teams.
• Ability to prioritize impactful work, operate with ambiguity, and learn unfamiliar domains.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education, training, or experience in a relevant field.
• Curiosity about interpretability, AI safety, and the societal impact of technical work.

Nice to have

• Experience with GCP or AWS, Kubernetes, networking, and infrastructure as code.
• Security engineering experience in identity, authentication, access management, sandboxing, or red teaming.
• Experience with data warehousing, large-scale storage, data lifecycle management, compute schedulers, accelerator fleets, or observability stacks.
