Senior Research Methodologist — Principal Investigator, Multimodal Survey Experiment (Survey Research)

Location: 100% remote within the United States, with international travel to study countries; nationwide remote office (US99), Reston, Virginia

What you will do

• Provide scientific and technical leadership for a two-year multimodal survey experiment comparing hybrid phone and in-person designs with contemporaneous DHS surveys in two West and Central African countries.
• Lead study design decisions, protocol development, ethics and IRB submissions, and coordination with in-country co-Principal Investigators and national partners.
• Direct sampling, power design, dual-frame estimation, non-response and replacement protocols, mode-effects analysis, equivalence testing, and small area estimation.
• Coordinate fieldwork across household-first and phone-first study arms, including malaria biomarker collection.
• Develop a cost-quality frontier, conduct post-hoc simulations, and translate findings into decision frameworks and guidance for survey designers.
• Lead reports, peer-reviewed manuscripts, presentations, funder communication, and technical coordination of the multidisciplinary team.

Requirements

• Ph.D. or equivalent in demography, statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology, public health, social or behavioral science, or a related quantitative field; alternatively, a relevant master's degree with 20+ years of experience.
• At least 15 years of experience designing and implementing population-based or public health surveys.
• Deep expertise in probability sampling, weighting, complex survey design, and advanced survey estimation.
• Experience with household survey operations in low- and middle-income countries, research grants or contracts, and methodological leadership.
• Significant experience writing study protocols, funder reports, and peer-reviewed publications.
• Must be able to work remotely within the United States and travel internationally to study countries.

Nice to have

• Experience with DHS or DHS-like surveys and malaria or other biomarker data collection.
• Survey research experience in West or Central Africa.
• Familiarity with phone-based and multimodal data collection, including RDD, list-based, or hybrid designs.
• Experience partnering with national statistical offices, ministries, or other in-country institutions.
• Working proficiency in French.
