Mechanical Lab Operations Lead

Location: On-site in San Jose (Santana Row), United States. Relocation support is available for candidates moving to San Jose.

What you will do

• Own daily operations and maintenance for the machine shop, including manual and CNC mills, lathes, saws, brakes, and tooling.
• Manage the additive manufacturing suite with FDM, SLA, and Nylon SLS/FDM printers, along with post-processing and ventilation equipment.
• Commission, position, calibrate, and maintain lab machinery and precision inspection instruments.
• Lead lab safety, EH&S compliance, chemical and hazardous-material handling, SDS logging, and waste disposal.
• Maintain inventory systems, procurement workflows, storage areas, and rack-build logistics for engineering projects.
• Define fabrication, printing, and assembly request intake processes while optimizing lab layout and throughput.

Requirements

• 5+ years managing a mechanical lab, machine shop, prototyping facility, or hardware R&D space.
• Hands-on experience with manual machine-shop tools and applicable safety requirements.
• Practical experience operating and maintaining FDM, SLA, and Nylon/SLS 3D-printer fleets and post-processing equipment.
• Ability to build inventory, asset-management, 5S, and request-tracking systems from the ground up.
• Strong knowledge of OSHA standards, shop safety, PPE enforcement, chemical handling, and particulate filtration.
• Ability to work standing in a shop environment and lift or move heavy lab inventory and equipment.

Nice to have

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Technology, or a related technical field.
• CNC programming, CAM, precision laser cutting, or custom fixture fabrication experience.
• Familiarity with liquid cooling loops, facility chillers, manifold systems, and power distribution units.
• Hardware startup experience and familiarity with Jira, spreadsheets, CAD, or slicing software.
