Staff Software Engineer (Genomics)

Location: Remote - California, U.S.

Salary: $164,300–$246,700 per year

What you will do

• Architect, develop, and enhance Java/Spring and React applications supporting variant identification, curation, ranking, and clinical reporting workflows.
• Design data models, RESTful APIs, and search/query strategies for large-scale genomic variant data.
• Translate complex scientific and clinical requirements into clear technical designs with subject matter experts.
• Lead architecture reviews, design documentation, technical alignment, and engineering mentorship across teams.
• Troubleshoot production issues and improve reliability, observability, performance, security, automated testing, and CI/CD.
• Use AI-assisted development tools responsibly and help establish effective team practices.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• 8+ years of software engineering experience focused on full-stack application development.
• Proven technical leadership and mentoring experience.
• Strong expertise in cloud-based solutions, service-oriented architecture, third-party integrations, and RESTful API design.
• Experience with OpenSearch or Elasticsearch, including index and mapping design, query performance tuning, and faceted filtering over large datasets.
• Experience with Java/Spring, React, relational databases such as PostgreSQL and MySQL, and NoSQL technologies including MongoDB and DynamoDB.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree.
• Experience with scientific, genomics, or healthcare-related applications.
• Experience designing, developing, and deploying cloud-native applications on AWS, Azure, or GCP.
