Principal Software Engineer, Kernels (AI)

Location: Hybrid, onsite at the Santa Clara, CA headquarters 3+ days per week

Salary: $195,000–$285,000 per year, plus equity and bonus opportunities

What you will do

• Develop, enhance, and maintain software kernels for next-generation AI hardware.
• Productize the software stack for the company’s AI compute engine.
• Map algorithms and computational graphs from AI frameworks to underlying hardware architectures.
• Implement and optimize ML operators such as GEMMs, convolutions, BLAS, SIMD operations, softmax, layer normalization, and pooling.
• Build compiler infrastructure in collaboration with compiler experts and work across ML, systems, mixed-signal, DSP, and CPU teams.
• Deliver scalable software solutions within tight development windows while balancing hardware-software trade-offs.

Requirements

• MS in computer engineering, mathematics, physics, or a related field with 10+ years of industry experience, or PhD with 5+ years of industry experience.
• Strong understanding of computer architecture, data structures, system software, and machine learning fundamentals.
• Proficiency in C/C++ and Python development in Linux environments using standard development tools.
• Experience implementing algorithms for specialized hardware, including FPGAs, DSPs, GPUs, and AI accelerators, using technologies such as CUDA.
• Experience developing for embedded SIMD vector processors such as Tensilica.
• Strong ownership, leadership, collaboration, and execution skills.

Nice to have

• Startup, small-team, or incubation experience.
• Experience with TensorFlow, PyTorch, or other deep learning frameworks.
• Experience with ML compilers and related technologies such as MLIR, LLVM, TVM, or Glow.
• Experience with computer vision, NLP, or recommendation models.
• Experience at a cloud provider or AI compute/subsystem company.
