Head of Security Research (Cybersecurity)

Location: Remote - US; 100% remote from home with semi-frequent local and national travel, including some overnight travel.

Salary: $220,000–$255,000 USD base salary per year, plus equity and benefits.

What you will do

• Lead and build a team of security engineers and research specialists across detection and response, threat hunting, threat intelligence, alert investigation, and incident response.
• Act as a player/coach by setting research and engineering direction while writing detections, responding to CVEs, reviewing alerts, and hunting attackers.
• Build measurement and evaluation frameworks to ensure AI-agent analysis matches expert human security outputs.
• Encode expert human intuition and techniques into agentic security systems and improve their effectiveness in real-world deployments.
• Prototype new approaches to AI-powered cyber defense and shape the product roadmap through operational expertise.
• Define practical autonomous defense systems and contribute thought leadership on agentic security operations.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in detection and response, security engineering, threat hunting, SOC operations, or incident response.
• 3+ years of experience managing security engineers, threat hunters, SOC analysts, or similar technical teams.
• Experience building and operating SOC functions, detection programs, or security research teams.
• Proven ability to lead high-performing technical teams while remaining hands-on.
• Ability to mentor across detection, threat intelligence, and incident response domains and collaborate closely with product and engineering.
• Early-stage startup mindset with comfort operating in ambiguity and executing rapidly.

Nice to have

• Experience building commercial security products or services.
• Familiarity with AI agents such as Claude Code and OpenClaw.
• Published security research or contributions to the broader security community.
• Experience working with product marketing and field teams to promote security technology.
• Founder experience, early-stage startup experience, or experience launching a new technology initiative.
