Staff Software Engineer, Infrastructure (Distributed Systems)

Location: London, UK; hybrid policy requiring staff to be in an office at least 25% of the time

Annual salary: £325,000–£390,000 GBP

What you will do

• Scope and lead complex, ambiguous, multi-month infrastructure projects from initial definition through production.
• Make architectural decisions for distributed systems and infrastructure used by engineering, research, and product teams.
• Translate research and product compute needs into technical designs and align technical direction across teams.
• Own the reliability, scalability, and security of systems as usage and complexity grow.
• Set infrastructure strategy and standards, including incident response, postmortems, and on-call rotations.
• Mentor engineers and raise the team’s technical bar.

Requirements

• Experience designing, building, and operating large-scale distributed systems or production infrastructure.
• Independent delivery of complex, ambiguous, multi-month technical projects.
• Experience making architectural decisions adopted by other engineers and teams.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals and proficiency in Python, Rust, Go, Java, or another programming language.
• Experience with modern cloud infrastructure, Kubernetes, and infrastructure-as-code on AWS and/or GCP.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education, training, or professional experience, with strong written and verbal communication skills.

Nice to have

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, excluding internships.
• Machine learning infrastructure experience with GPUs, TPUs, Trainium, or networking such as NCCL.
• Low-level systems experience, including Linux kernel tuning or eBPF.
• Security or privacy engineering experience and prior technical leadership or mentoring experience.
