Principal Engineer (Fintech)

Location: Remote within Canada; Toronto/GTA preferred, Ottawa considered.

What you will do

• Define long-term technical architecture across payments, platform, data, integrations, and operational systems.
• Design scalable, secure, resilient, and highly available distributed systems for global B2B payments.
• Lead complex engineering initiatives spanning multiple teams, including modernization and technical-debt reduction.
• Establish standards for architecture, reliability, observability, security, testing, and operational excellence.
• Lead AI transformation initiatives involving AI agents, LLM workflows, intelligent automation, and developer tooling.
• Shape technical strategy for stablecoins, blockchain, digital assets, settlement mechanisms, and modern payment rails.

Requirements

• Approximately 12–18 years of software engineering experience.
• Experience at Principal Engineer, Staff+, Senior Staff, Architect, or equivalent level.
• Deep expertise in distributed systems, backend architecture, APIs, microservices, cloud infrastructure, and event-driven systems.
• Hands-on engineering and architecture experience with scalability, data consistency, reliability, security, fault tolerance, and production operations.
• Experience leading technically complex initiatives across multiple teams and influencing strategy without direct authority.
• Experience in fintech, payments, financial services, or another high-scale regulated technology environment, with excellent communication skills.

Nice to have

• Experience with B2B or cross-border payments, payment processing, settlement, reconciliation, ledgering, treasury, foreign exchange, or financial APIs.
• Experience with AI agents, LLM integrations, machine learning platforms, or AI-enabled products.
• Experience with stablecoins, blockchain infrastructure, digital wallets, crypto payments, or digital assets.
• Background in a modern fintech, payments, technology, or AI-native organization.
