Release Engineer (Automotive)

Location: Hybrid work in Foster City or San Diego, California, United States

Salary: $140,000–$190,000 base salary per year, plus potential RSUs, stock appreciation rights, and sign-on bonus.

Zoox develops fully autonomous vehicles and the supporting mobility ecosystem, combining robotics, machine learning, and automotive software.

What you will do

• Own the release lifecycle for vehicle software components from branch cut through validation, hotfixes, and production deployment.
• Coordinate release readiness across integration, QA, and component teams, including approvals and production-readiness indicators.
• Build and scale automation for branch management, merge workflows, release visibility, and metrics.
• Partner with component teams and downstream build consumers to improve the release experience.
• Turn effective release practices into shared tooling and processes across Zoox.

Requirements

• 3–5 years of experience in release engineering, build engineering, or release management for complex software products.
• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering or computer science, or equivalent experience.
• Proficiency with Git, including branch management and conflict resolution.
• Experience building and operating CI/CD pipelines with Buildkite, Jenkins, Bamboo, or similar tools.
• Programming experience in Python or another scripting language for release and build automation.
• Strong communication skills and adaptability in a changing environment.

Nice to have

• Experience with Bazel.
• Experience releasing embedded, firmware, or safety-critical software.
• Familiarity with AWS or Azure.
